Smithfield Road Upgrade

Project Overview

The Smithfield Road Upgrade Project included a range of modifications to Smithfield Road, from Elizabeth Drive to the Polding Street / Cumberland Highway intersection. The 5km length of roadworks aimed to improve traffic flow by widening Smithfield Road to two lanes of traffic in each direction. The project included a range of works in order of priority as shown in the sections below:

• Priority 1 Package 1: Elizabeth Drive/ Smithfield Road Intersection upgrade.

•Priority 1 Package 4: Re-align Richards Road with the entrance to Fairfield Showground.

• Priority 2 Package 5: Road widening south of the intersection with Dunstan Street and upgrade at the intersection of Dunstan Street.

• Priority 2 Package 5: Upgrade of Smithfield Road intersections at Beavors Street and Berry Street.

Scope of works

Priority 1 Package 1: Elizabeth Drive / Smithfield Road Intersection Upgrade:

Road widening and traffic island relocations for additional lanes in Smithfield Road at the intersection of Elizabeth Drive
Upgrading the traffic signals and pedestrian crossing facilities
Relocating and/or upgrading utility services as required by the new road layouts
Relocating and/or upgrading drainage services as required by the new road layouts
Line marking and signposting
Minor landscaping including tree removal

Priority 1 Package 4: Re-align Richards Road with the entrance to Fairfield Showground:

Road realignment and road widening for a new signalised intersection in Smithfield Road at the intersection with the Fairfield Showground entrance and realigned Richards Road
Creating a new roundabout in Richards Road at the intersection with Winburndale Road, which is coordinated with the realignment of Richards Road for the new signalised intersection at the Fairfield Showground entrance
Relocating and/or upgrading utility services as required by the new road layouts
Relocating and/or upgrading drainage services as required by the new road layouts
Line marking and signposting
Minor landscaping including tree removal

Priority 2 Package 5: Dunstan, Berry to Beavors Intersection Upgrade:

Road widening and traffic island relocations for additional lanes on Smithfield Road
Relocating and/or upgrading utility services as required by the new road layouts
Relocating and/or upgrading drainage services as required by the new road layouts
Line marking and signposting
Minor landscaping including tree removal
